Interfaith Dinner
|
|
The stories
pertaining to our lives, cultures and faith have often been conveyed to others
second hand. Unfortunately, our reluctance to narrate our own stories have
resulted in these stories being fraught with falsehoods and misconceptions.
M.A.C.C.A. has organized an interfaith dinner that coincided with the night of
power of Ramadan 1427. Leaders and constituents of the Jewish, Christian and
Muslim communities were invited to share a meal, mingle and tell their stories
first hand. M.A.C.C.A. is going to be organizing these interfaith dinners on a
regular basis in an effort to deepen understanding between these groups, bring
them together and isolate the forces of separation. |

Spring
Break 2007 will no longer carry the same connotation that it traditionally did.
It will instead go down in history as the time some US college students
traveled from Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts to Morocco as part of
their Arabic program to assist local residents of a remote village in Morocco.

MAGWA 2nd Annual Convention
|
|
|
M.A.C.C.A. was
invited to the Moroccan American second annual convention with a theme of
"United we thrive," that congregated all Moroccan organizations throughout the
US. These various organizations were from scattered states, had different
missions but shared one common goal. That is to empower and promote Moroccans
and Morocco. While we went the extra 400 miles others traveled thousands of
miles to be there. The room was filled with energy and motivation seen through
the radiant faces and sparkling eyes despite the sleepless nights spent
preparing for this event. Photos of the event are available on our
gallery.

Community Cookout
|
|
|
Those
who believe that change can only happen starting at the grassroots level all
flocked to Malden for the community cookout that was held at the First Parish
church lawn in Malden at Corner of Elm and Pleasant Streets. People from
different ethnic, religious backgrounds and political inclinations interacted
and talked about issues such as affordable housing, community inclusiveness,
poverty, hunger, war, immigrant rights and more. Some of the very visible
organizations that sponsored the events included The Moroccan American Civic
and cultural Association, Bread of Life, La Comunidad, First Parish in Malden -
Universalist, The Great Wall Center, Malden Area Communities Against War,
Malden Asian Disability Advocacy Coalition, Malden Asian Pacific American
Coalition, Massachusetts Jobs with Justice, Multicultural Affairs Committee,
Service Employees International Union Local 509, Tri-City Community Action
Program, United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1445. MACCA can't be
emphatic enough about the importance of such events in helping the community
achieve inclusion and prominence withing the weave of the local community as
well as the larger society.

Feeding the Homeless
|
|
|
In an effort to
live up to its civic mission and to honor its deep commitment to concerns of
the community at large, MACCA sponsored a community dinner to benefit the
homeless in the city of Malden. MACCA funded, cooked, and served dinner to
about 100 homeless people in a show of compassion and empathy towards the
plight and the endurances of others. Our interfaith partners, Seven mile road
and Forestdale church, also collaborated with us on this endeavor. Photos of
the event are available on our gallery.

Introducing Our Prophet (pbuh)
|
|
|
A night of
remembrance felt right in place for those who wanted to get re-acquainted with
the prophet (pbuh) and his legacy and for those who had only heard about
prophet Mohamed (pbuh) from the Danish cartoons and were wondering how a person could
be loved so much 14 centuries later. Imam Faruuq gave a powerful speech that
touched our hearts and Dr. Lazzouni gave a meticulous scholarly speech
that enlightened us. Eminent calligrapher Haji Noor Deen entertained and
dazzled the crowd with his skills and humor and children filled the stage
to pick raffle tickets. Al Noor Ensemble was the icing on the cake and the
beautifully decorated stage (courtesy of Moroccan Caravan) added warmth and cosiness
to the event. Photos of
the event are available at Driss Images.
